- Gallipoli goes off without trouble -
25.04.2003 12:37:11

Australians and New Zealanders were at Gallipoli on ANZAC Day
remembering the special bond created 88 years ago.

ANZACs formed the backbone of the 200,000, British-led army that swarmed ashore.

Jim Anderton, Minister for Economic Development attended and spoke at the ceremony.

"To Australia and New Zealand, the cost of the landing was 8,000 men, of whom at least 2,300 were killed. They were men whom their countries could ill afford to lose but with their lives they purchased a tradition beyond all human power to appraise."

Thousands braved the cold to remember the fallen and amid the tightest security ever seen at Gallipoli.

Turkish security authorities warned that the service could be the target of a terrorist threat after reports that 35 specially trained terrorists had crossed from Iraq into Turkey.

The focus of commemorations at the service was the legacy left by the troops.

Governor General Dame Sylvia Cartwright, "We remember how many ordinary New Zealanders, just like the young people here, found the courage to hold on in the face of adversity and unthinkable suffering."

And another, more recent war was remembered as Australia paid tribute to those in Iraq.
