- Big ANZAC Day crowds -
29.04.2003 10:37:31

Forster Tuncurry`s ANZAC Day services "broke all records", with large crowds supporting the dawn and main services, and lining the streets to support the marchers despite the inclement weather.

Forster Tuncurry RSL Sub Branch president Ted Tisdale said he was thrilled with the turnout, which is getting bigger and bigger each year.

The Dawn Service, at Tuncurry, was attended by 405 people (95 more than last year`s gathering), who afterwards gathered for breakfast at the Tuncurry Bowling Club.

It was wonderful to see many of the younger generation showing their pride and support for Australia’s defenders, both past and present. Photographed during Friday’s parade was Nora Christensen (right), with her “adopted” grand-dad Phil Schubert.

The ANZAC Day march was this year led by Korean War Veterans, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Korean War.

Marching along with the ex-services personnel and their loved ones, serving representatives of Australia`s Army, Navy and Airforce (plus a US serviceman from the USS Doyle), was a strong contingent of students from local schools.

Mr Tisdale said the children were determined to complete the march (despite a downpour which hit just as the march was crossing the bridge) and their dedication was to be commended.

Also commended were the many members of the public who turned out to cheer on the marchers, despite the weather.

Continuing rain resulted in a slightly shorter main service, which was followed by a luncheon at the Forster Tuncurry Memorial Services Club.

In keeping with the general success of the day, a record number of people attended the luncheon.
