- Rain didn`t dampen ANZAC spirit -
30.04.2003 20:08:32

Veterans and their families turned out despite the looming clouds for traditional ANZAC Day Services last Friday.

The day began with dawn services and laying wreaths at Ulladulla Kendall Cottage.

President of the Returned Services League and retired Major General, Mr Barry Hockney led the ceremonies.

A record number of marchers took part in
this year’s ANZAC Day march though Milton.

Student Isaac Holmes played the last post at 6am and created a sombre mood among the large crowd.

As usual the RSL Ladies Auxiliary put in extra effort to make the early start more comfortable with tea and coffee.

The day progressed with the traditional veteran`s breakfast at the Ulladulla Ex-Servicemans`s Club and speeches from both veterans and community members.

The rain managed to hold out long enough for the Milton ANZAC March, which this year saw a large and enthusiastic crowd, with Australian flags lining the street.

Community spirit was obvious as the Ulladulla RCP 2UUU Cadets and the State Emergency Services led the March from the corner of Church Street up the Princes Highway to the Cenotaph.

Press officer for the RSL Club, Mick Timmings was very happy with both the crowd turnout and the atmosphere on the day.

"The people who participated in the ANZAC March are a credit to our community and makes me proud to be a part of the Ulladulla area," Mick said.

Despite concerns of ANZAC Day ceremonies being used as a platform for anti-war protestors, all went well as the community remembered the fallen ANZACS.
