- New pledge on Gallipoli -
01.05.2003 11:26:48

A joint project between the cities of Albany and Gallipoli was proposed
during the signing of a Friendship Agreement last week.

Gallipoli Mayor Cihat Bingol said a monument to signify the friendship that would last forever should be decided on and built in time for the 100th anniversary of ANZAC Day.

"Whatever is necessary, we will do our part," he said through an interpreter at the signing of the agreement at ANZAC Memorial Park on Friday afternoon.

"Together with you, we would like to strenghten the relationship between Albany and Gallipoli.

"The Friendship Agreement should be an example to the rest of the world and will join our hearts together.

"Let our children hold flowers rather than guns."

Mr Bingol said the agreement not only strengthened the relationship between the two cities, but bonds in culture and trade.

The Agreement Declaration aims to gain a wider understanding of the respective municipalities, citizens, community life and traditions.

It encourages the development of an exchange of knowledge and experience.

Albany Mayor Alison Goode, in her last official function before the election this Saturday, spoke of friendship and the intangible results it could bring.

She said the agreement developed from a shared historical connection, respecting that both countries had suffered.

There was a need to turn that first fateful meeting nearly 100 years ago into a relationship with strong foundations.

Ms Goode said she hoped Albany would become the starting point of the pilgrimage to Gallipoli, and encouraged Turkish visitors to trace the footsteps of the Australians buried on their soil.

After the signing, the Mr Bingol presented Ms Goode with an engraved plate. Dancers from the Turkish Australian Cultural House performed along with Noongar Graham Simpson.
