Your guided
daily Gallipoli Tour:

The WW1 battlefields
of Gallipoli are situated about 15 km
from Canakkale in Turkey.
Gallipoli
Tours depart daily
from 01st April to 31th October.
The daily Gallipoli Tour is as follows:
19:30 4-Corners documentary 'Fatal Shore', gives an overview of the
Gallipoli Campaign and contains interviews with veterans from Australia,
New Zealand, Britain and Turkey.
21:30 The movie Gallipoli, an Australian production, directed by Peter
Weir and starring Mel Gibson, gives an insight into the mentality of those
that enlisted in 1915 and gives the viewer an idea of conditions at the
time. It culminates in the famous charge by the 10th Australian Light
Horse, which took place at The Nek at Gallipoli as a part of the August
offensive.
On the following day your Gallipoli Tour departs from Gallipoli -
Canakkale and proceeds by ferry across the part of the Dardenelles known
as the Narrows. So named because it is the narrowest part of the
Dardenelles (Gallipoli peninsula), less then one kilometre across.
The ferry pulls in at the
small fishing village of Kilitbahir, which means lock of the sea.
Kilitbahir is known for its fort built in 1453 by Mehmet II the Conqueror,
as a part of his successful siege of Constantinople naval battle, that
took place in the Dardenelles prior to the army landings. The Gallipoli
Tour meets an air-conditioned tour bus and proceeds to the Gallipoli
battlefield area and visits:
- ANZAC Kabatepe War Museum which
contains relics from the Gallipoli Campaign including original diary
extracts and letters.
- Brighton beach, the intended
landing place, lunch and swimming (weather permitting!).
- Beach cemetery on the southern tip
of ANZAC Cove, the landing place of the first wave of Australian and
New Zealand troops at Gallipoli and home to up to 30.000 troops during
the Gallipoli Campaign. John
Simpson Kirkpatrick of "Simpson and his donkey" fame
is buried in this cemetery.
- Ari Burnu cemetery on the northern
tip of ANZAC Cove, where the Dawn Service is held each ANZAC Day at
Gallipoli.
- Lone Pine Australian Memorial,
site of the successful attack and capture of Turkish trenches by the
Australians during the August offensive at Gallipoli.
- Johnston's Jolly where you'll
visit original Allied and Turkish trenches and tunnels.
- The Nek site of the famous Light
Horse charge depicted in the Gallipoli movie.
- Chunuk Bair New Zealand Memorial,
captured by the New Zealanders during the August offensive, highest
point captured during the entire Gallipoli Campaign.
The
duration of the Gallipoli Tour is a approximately 6 hours, but is flexible
and depends on the weather, whether or not swimming takes place and the
size of the group. The Gallipoli Tour returns to Canakkale, but those
wishing to continue onto Istanbul, Kusadasi or Selcuk immediately after
the Gallipoli tour, can arrange this through the guide.
